User Engagement Lead

Tim joined the Campus in 2019 as User Engagement Lead in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Hub which uses data science to support international development. His role is to identify and engage with users of the Hub’s outputs and services to ensure these meet their needs.

He has worked on various statistical outputs at the ONS, UK government and Eurostat before moving to the Department for International Development (DFID), working in East Africa supporting the Tanzania and Kenya statistics offices in the 2000s. Tim has also held consultancy roles with the World Bank, United Nations and others. He returned to work part-time in his current role in the ONS in 2019.

Technical report: Predicting cattle camp locations in South Sudan from Sentinel 2 satellite imagery

Cattle are central to many people’s livelihoods in South Sudan, but there are very few recent data on the number of animals and their geographic distribution. Building on previous work, this blog explores new methods, based on convolutional neural networks, that can better distinguish cattle camps from similar landscape features.
